Force of Nature: Verdon Gorge, France
The Mediterranean French Riviera is famous for its glamorous resorts. It is a hotspot destination for holidays. However, just an hour drive north, gets you to the Verdon Gorge, which is the deepest canyon in Europe.
Reaching depths of 2,296 feet, the canyon stretches for 31 miles. Amazingly, the gorge was only discovered in 1905, while some areas were found as recently as the 1940s. However, it’s a case of better late than never for this picturesque canyon.
The lake of Sainte-Croix is its focal point, which attracts tourists. Those, who are keen on outdoor pursuits such as: canoeing, kayaking and pedal boating, crystal-clear blue water of Sainte-Croix is heaven sent.
Also, the area attracts hikers, who are drawn to the dramatic and challenging limestone terrain. Bird watchers flock to the area, in order to catch a glimpse of lappet-faced and griffon vultures, eagles, and various other birds of prey.
For those, who prefer less exertion, the gorge can be driven by car. The roads offer incredible views and ample opportunities to stop and take in the scenery.
