The Innovative Bubble houses of Florida

The Bubble houses are a pair of unique homes located in Florida. Built in 1954 by the company Air-form, the houses were designed using the airform monolithic dome system created by Wallace Neff, which utilizes reinforced concrete cast in place over an inflated balloon to shape the structure. The interiors of the homes originally featured a bathroom and open-concept living, dining, and kitchen area on the main floor, which measured 569 square feet. The sleeping area was located on a loft-style space above the main floor. The houses were designed to be affordable and were intended to sell for $6,500. After their completion, it was reported that over 3,000 people had visited the newly built bubble houses. The houses were featured in the February 22, 1954 issue of Life magazine, where they were described as being both “hurricane-proof” and “bug-proof.” These unique homes can be found on Venus Street, in the Zeus Park neighborhood of Hobe Sound, Martin County, Florida.
