Discover the adventure that lies within Europe
Are you in search of your next thrilling getaway? Europe is host to a huge variety of possibilities for an adventure vacation, no matter your preferred flavor of activity, so it’s no surprise that Americans are surging across the Atlantic in record numbers to discover it for themselves.
With the opportunity to throw yourself into incredible culture and cuisine no matter where on the continent you go, it’s a part of the world that’s well worth exploring. We’ve collected a few of our favorite options for European outdoorsy trips that’ll nourish the soul.
Sailing the Greek islands
If you’re ready to brave the brilliant blue waters, then there’s nothing quite like a sailing trip through some of the more than 6,000 islands that can be found around the Greek mainland. We recommend taking a couple of weeks between May and October when the weather is at its mildest with very few storms so that you can soak in the atmosphere of this stunning Mediterranean paradise. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or inclined to hire local experts who can help you travel, you’ll be in for a treat as you explore secluded coves, ancient ruins, and coastal towns.
Cycling in Italy
Active vacationers will find no shortage of incredible destinations for European cycling tours but Italy stands among the very best. Journeying on two wheels is one of the most rewarding ways to make the most of what this storied nation has to offer, particularly when exploring its largest lake, Lake Garda, or the Dolomites – the iconic mountain range in the Italian Alps.
These diamonds in the north of the country are well prepared for cyclists of all skill and experience levels, with unbelievable views of towering peaks and picturesque valleys just waiting to be discovered.
Hiking in the Alps
Expanding beyond Italy into France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and even further, the Alps are also an ideal destination for those keen to move under their power. If you’re up for the challenge, you could take a longer break and plot out a route that’ll take you through several countries at once, or spend more time around the imposing Mont Blanc – the range’s tallest mountain, even if it’s actually shrinking.
Rock-climbing in Spain
If climbing’s more your speed, then Spain is a must. It’s a large country with diverse landscapes and typically fantastic conditions for ascent. One of the most beloved locations for climbers, with plenty of history, is Siurana, Catalonia, which boasts more than 1,500 routes for visitors of all abilities. But you can also head to the far south of Spain, to El Chorro in Andalusia – a better choice for the winter months as it’s closer to the Equator. Wherever you go, you’ll be able to enjoy evenings full of incredible local tapas and sangria.
