The Mont-Saint-Michel has a rich history. It served as a stronghold in the sixth and seventh centuries for Gallo-Roman culture and was later occupied by the Franks. During WWII, it was occupied by German soldiers and was a major tourist attraction for Germans. After the D-Day invasion, Allied troops entered Mont-Saint-Michel accompanied by two British reporters and local French people. It was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list in 1979 for its cultural, historical, architectural, and natural beauty. Today, other fine buildings line the steep village street and have been converted into museums, restaurants, hotels, and shops for tourists.

The site was also featured in the 2004 film “Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers”, and served as inspiration for the town and castle in Disney’s 2010 hit film “Tangled” and the design of the New Londo Ruins location in the 2011 video game Dark Souls. Mont-Saint-Michel’s likeness also appears in a mission in the 2022 video game Sniper Elite 5, as an abbey closely resembling the site.
