Fantasy Canyon: Enjoy One of Utah’s Most Surreal Landscapes
The state of Utah is home to a great deal of striking, fantastical scenery. Few places are quite as captivating as Fantasy Canyon — which is located 40 miles south of Vernal, Utah. Fantasy Canyon is a small, hidden sandstone canyon filled with towering rock formations which resemble claymation figurines that are on the verge of springing to life.

Fantasy Canyon visitors can hike a short trail that offers up-close views of some of Utah’s most unique rock formations. Some travelers say that the jagged rock formations remind them of faces, dragons, castles, and sea creatures. A series of signs feature information about the cycle of erosion that is responsible for shaping the ever-evolving landscape.

Fantasy Canyon is relatively small and can easily be explored in a few hours or less. Kids love to explore Fantasy Canyon’s whimsical landscape. Dogs are also permitted. Fantasy Canyon is located on Bureau of Land Management land, so visitors are asked to respect the brittle rocks and leave no trace.
Dinosaur National Monument — which is located in Utah and Colorado — is a short distance from Fantasy Canyon. The Utah portion of Dinosaur National Monument features a sprawling Quarry Exhibit Hall which showcases over 1,500 dinosaur bones. The Quarry Wall features the remains of several different types of dinosaurs, including the ever-popular spiky-tailed Stegosaurus.

The Fossil Discovery Trail features some impressive fossils — such as fish scales, dinosaur bones, and primitive sea creatures — that are visible in the rock face. Cub Creek is also home to some incredible Fremont petroglyphs, including some distinctive lizards.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

The best time to visit Fantasy Canyon is during spring and fall, when daytime temperatures are mild and comfortable for hiking. Summer can be extremely hot, with little shade available, while winter may bring snow and muddy conditions that make the trail less accessible.
Fantasy Canyon is about an hour’s drive south of Vernal, Utah. The last portion of the journey is on unpaved roads, so a high-clearance or all-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended, especially after rain. Make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas, as services are limited in this remote area.
The unusual rock formations of Fantasy Canyon are especially photogenic during the golden hours — shortly after sunrise or before sunset — when the low-angle light enhances the textures and shadows. A tripod can help capture the fine details of the formations.

Be cautious while climbing on or near the formations, as the sandstone is very fragile and can crumble unexpectedly. Please pack out all trash and avoid touching or marking the rocks to help preserve the landscape for future visitors.
In addition to Crystal Ranch Lodge, travelers can consider nearby campgrounds in the Vernal area or primitive camping on BLM land (check local regulations). Vernal offers hotels, motels, and RV parks for those seeking more amenities.

Fantasy Canyon is sometimes nicknamed “Nature’s China Shop” because of the delicate, brittle nature of its formations — one wrong step can easily break them, so tread carefully!
