The Western United States is home to countless dusty ghost towns that experienced their heyday during the gold rush of the late 19th and early 20th century. Goldfield, Nevada is considered by many history buffs to be one of America’s most lively ghost towns. “Lively ghost town” may sound like a contradiction, but Goldfield is often referred to as a “living ghost town,” thanks to the 250 residents who work tirelessly to preserve the town’s fascinating history.
One of Goldfield’s most celebrated landmarks is the Goldfield Hotel which was considered one of the most opulent hotels in the Western United States when it opened its gilded doors in 1908. Once decked out in the finest mahogany and sparkling chandeliers, the Goldfield Hotel fell on hard times as the gold rush started to subside.

Adventurous travelers can explore the interior of the Goldfield Hotel—which is currently undergoing renovations—by signing up for a haunted history tour. If you’re not afraid to climb 5 flights of stairs, explore dimly lit rooms while a tour guide tells you about the poor unfortunate souls who passed away in the same spot where you are standing, or wonder if the cold spot you’re experiencing is the result of poor insulation or a restless spirit—stop for a drink at the Santa Fe Saloon and Motel and ask who is currently offering ghost tours. The Santa Fe Saloon and Motel offers lodging for those looking for a place to stay, as the Goldfield Hotel does not offer overnight stays.

No trip to Goldfield is complete without doing a little mining of your own. Gemfield—which is located 4 miles outside of Goldfield—offers visitors the opportunity to dig for precious minerals such as turquoise, obsidian, crystal, and even a bit of silver and gold. Those trying their luck at Gemfield should pack tools such as shovels, pails, and picks. If you pay a small fee and sign a waiver, you can walk away with whatever beautiful gems you excavate.
