Discover Riquewihr: A Timeless Medieval Town in France
The picturesque town of Riquewihr—which is located in the Alsace region of France near the borders of Germany and Switzerland—is unique among quaint French towns because it didn’t sustain heavy damage during World War II. When you arrive in Riquewihr, you will feel as though you have traveled back in time. Visitors can view a medieval tower that offers a stunning panoramic view of the vineyards of Alsace, explore a historic re-creation of a winegrower’s house, and sample some of Riquewihr’s legendary Riesling wine.
The Dolder Tower—which was constructed in the 13th century—is an excellent starting point for any tour of Riquewihr. The Dolder Tower served as a defensive tower where guards could keep an eye out for potential invaders and ensure that the fortified walls of the city were not compromised. Today, the Dolder is home to a museum that explores the evolution of medieval fortified towns. The 4th floor of the tower offers a sweeping view of Riquewihr’s charming, colorful houses and the gorgeous vineyards and mountains that surround the fully intact fortified town.
Visitors can also explore the Tower of Thieves, which is a pentagonal tower where prisoners were incarcerated and those suspected of being up to no good were interrogated. The Tower of Thieves features a dank basement dungeon and several torture devices that were used to coerce suspects into confessing, including a metal vice designed to slowly crush an accused person’s hand.
The Tower of Thieves is adjacent to the much jollier Winegrower’s House. Built in the 16th century, the Winegrower’s House features a cellar stocked with vintage winemaking tools, a kitchen adorned with antique utensils, and a cozy bedroom decorated with 16th-century decor. The Winegrower’s House offers a glimpse of how Riquewihr became synonymous with some of the world’s finest Riesling.
No visit to Riquewihr is complete without sampling some delicious regional wine. La Table du Gourmet offers a magnificent wine list composed entirely of locally made wine, with an emphasis on Riesling. La Table du Gourmet also features a delectable menu with dishes composed of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs from chef Jean-Luc Brendel’s personal garden.
Riquewihr is a gorgeous medieval town where visitors can stroll on cobblestone streets and admire picturesque buildings with vibrant flowers blooming in the windows. All of your worries will melt away as you explore the beautiful streets of a lovely French town that is steeped in rich medieval history.
