Charyn Canyon: Kazakhstan’s Grand Canyon
Kazakhstan is not a very popular tourist destination. When it comes to canyons, this is not a first country, that comes to mind. However, Charyn Canyon is worth visiting, if you are travelling nearby.
Located 120 miles from the capital Almaty, Charyn Canyon stretches over 50 miles, along the Charyn river. That’s where it takes its name from. Although, the canyon is way smaller, than the Grand Canyon, it is still a magnificent place.
It is thought, that there used to be a large lake on top of the canyon. As millions of years passed, the lake shrank. However, Charyn river continued to run through the sedimentary rocks, that are over 12 million years old. The landscapes are breathtaking. Nothing beats the view, when the sun is going down and paints the canyon in shades of red and orange.
Today, couple mile long path, takes visitors to the Charyn river, which flows at the bottom of the canyon. The stairs, that descend down to the gravel path, lead to the Valley of Castles. Tourists walk through beautiful rock formations, that are reminiscent of an ancient castles and towers. It is a not a walk in a park, but still an easy route. However, what needs to be considered when visiting the canyon, is the weather. Visitors should be prepared to walk in the heat, stay hydrated and wear sunscreen.
It may not be as grandiose as the Grand Canyon, but it’s still a beautiful area to explore. Whether it’ll be for just a few hours or an overnight camping trip, Charyn Canyon will not disappoint.

- The Valley of Castles is about 200 km and a roughly three-hour drive each way from Almaty. The main route descends to the canyon floor and follows it about 3 km to the Charyn River; the park offers paid transport for the descent/return. Expect rocky, exposed terrain and summer heat above 35°C; carry water, wear closed shoes and do not rely on mobile or card service at the gate. Check route and road conditions before travelling.

- A park entry/maintenance fee and optional park transport are charged separately. The park’s online tariff page still displays figures tied to the 2023 MCI and is not a current 2026 price list. A January 2026 report citing the Forestry and Wildlife Committee gives 0.2 MCI (KZT 865) per pedestrian/day and 0.6 MCI (KZT 2,595) per passenger car. Because the park’s own page is stale, confirm the amount at the official gate before setting out; transport is extra.
- Time needed
- The official Almaty tourism guide recommends allowing 2–3 hours for the Valley of Castles route, including the walk down the canyon to the river and stops; return transport can shorten the walk. The drive from Almaty is about three hours each way, in addition to the visit.
- Best season
- The official Almaty tourism guide recommends April–May and September–October for milder temperatures. The exposed canyon floor can exceed 35°C in summer; if visiting then, start early and carry water. Check current weather and park route notices.
- Opening hours
- The official park and tourism pages reviewed do not publish a dependable daily visitor timetable. The main tourist route is described as operating year-round, but gate, transport and route access may change with conditions. Confirm opening and entry procedures with the park before travelling.

I think there is a certain connotation to this article and the tone is somewhat degrading, soecufially the “but its still beautiful”. If you think that nothing compare to the nature of the US maybe write reviews only of that region?
I have seen plenty of people travel to Kazakhstan and the local people are always friendly and hospitable. Its also funny to be comparing one country to another, as there is really no need to compare it to the grand canyon, primarily because each country is entitled to have its own past and the formation of nature can be beautiful irregardless of where.
If the author is so indifferent about writing about turist destination then why bother. I emphasize that the tone of the article is very sloppy at the same time. If you can not appreciate or be respectful towards your surroundings then honestly dont bother. World is filled with ignorants as it is.
And who made you guys the deciders of what a criteria for a popular destination is.
Go to your Disney World instead.
