Monowi, Nebraska: Visit America’s Least Populated Town
In the 1930s, Monowi, Nebraska was a modest town with a population of about 150 people. Proximity to a rail line and fertile soil attracted farmers attempting to cultivate community and provide for their families. As the 20th century marched on, Monowi’s fortunes changed, and the town’s population began to decline. By the early 2000s, only 2 residents remained—an elderly married couple named Rudy and Elsie Eiler. Monowi, Nebraska officially had a population of 2.
Sadly, Rudy Eiler passed away in 2004. Ever since, Elsie Eiler—who is nearly 90 years old—has served as Monowi’s mayor, treasurer, tax collector, librarian, and the owner and operator of the Monowi Tavern. Elsie Eiler spends her days filing official paperwork related to the town, cooking burgers and serving beer, and occasionally checking out books to patrons at a library named in honor of Elsie’s dearly departed husband Rudy.
The Monowi Tavern is mostly frequented by locals who live within a 50-mile radius, but travelers who admire Elsie’s tireless work ethic and dogged independence often pop in to sign the guestbook and sip on a $2.00 beer and snack on a $3.50 hamburger. Visitors must traverse a dirt road to reach the town of Monowi. A green sign that reads “Monowi 1” is unmistakable. If you’re on your best behavior, you can even check out a book or magazine from Rudy’s Library, provided you return it in mint condition in a timely fashion.
Monowi is also home to a handful of eerie abandoned buildings, including a church, several houses, and the remnants of a general store. A stroll around Monowi offers a striking view of the vastness of the Great Plains. Elsie Eiler doesn’t seem to be bothered by the town’s desolation. A steady stream of residents from nearby towns check on Elsie and assist her in performing her many duties. Chances are you’ll run into some friendly faces from nearby towns during your time in Monowi.
Located in northern Nebraska, Monowi is close to the border of South Dakota. Needless to say, there aren’t many amenities near Monowi, but it’s an excellent place to stop if you’re road tripping through South Dakota‘s Badlands. Monowi is about 4 hours away from the stark beauty of Badlands National Park. Stopping for a bite and chat with the legendary Elsie Eiler in America’s least populated town is a travel experience that you will surely cherish for all time.
