The Dark Hedges: Ireland’s Fearsome Hunched Trees
The Dark Hedges are truly the stuff that nightmares are made of. A lane of densely packed beech trees which have grown together to form an ominous tunnel appears as though it may be the entrance to the underworld. Local legend says that the spirit of a Grey Lady frequents the Dark Hedges—weaving from tree to tree on dark nights. Some say the Grey Lady is a former employee of the Stuart family. The Stuart family planted the Dark Hedges to line the entrance of their Irish estate in the 18th century. The Stuart family never intended for their estate to become an eerie landmark. The trees simply grew into a foreboding formation. The fearsome transformation of the estate’s trees has led some to claim that the land is somehow cursed, and the Grey Lady is a restless resident of a nearby graveyard who roams the Dark Hedges alongside other uneasy spirits.
