Discover Vernazza: The Gem of Cinque Terre, Italy

Any lover of all things Italian will happily tell you that Vernazza is one of Italy‘s most resplendent villages. Dotted with colorful buildings that overlook the sea, the petite fishing village is considered the crown jewel of a collection of five small towns known as Cinque Terre. With no vehicular traffic, stepping onto the charming streets of Vernazza is like stepping back in time. Visitors can explore a rugged fortress, visit a shrine dedicated to sleek felines, eat delectable seafood, and light a candle at a tiny chapel that withstood a massive landslide.

The five towns of Cinque Terre—Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore—are so charming and historic that they have been converted into Cinque Terre National Park. Cinque Terre National Park features 48 hiking trails that offer sweeping views of the sea, lovely snapshots of towns such as Vernazza, and glimpses of several stunning vineyards. Visitors can choose to hike from town to town or travel via train or boat. The Vernazza-Monterosso trail leads to a towering staircase that offers a bird’s-eye view of Vernazza. Travelers who hike the Corniglia-Vernazza trail can take a leisurely break at the halfway point at the scenic Bar Il Gabbiano. Bar Il Gabbiano serves refreshing cocktails and small plates such as ripe tomatoes with fresh basil and soft cheese.

One of the most popular stops on the trails of Cinque Terre is a cat shrine located between Monterosso and Vernazza. Local cat lovers created a feeding station adorned with photos of Cinque Terre’s furry residents. You can feed and pet the cats and make a few new feline friends if your pockets are stocked with enough treats.

One of Vernazza’s most iconic attractions is a rugged fortress that overlooks the sea, known as Doria Castle. First constructed in the 11th century, Doria Castle served as the seat of power for several nobles and invading rulers who oversaw Cinque Terre. During World War II, Doria Castle even served as an anti-aircraft platform for German troops. Though much of the structure is currently in ruins, the nearly 230-foot tower still stands. For a small fee, visitors can tour the grounds of Doria Castle and climb to the top of the tower. Doria Castle occasionally hosts special exhibits and cultural events.

In 2011, a massive landslide did a great deal of damage in Vernazza. Local lore states that by some great miracle, the small stone chapel of Santa Marta was saved. Residents of Vernazza washed away a thick coat of mud and created a lovely shrine with an elegant statue of Santa Marta surrounded by flowers. Visitors can light a candle at Santa Marta’s shrine and say a prayer or think an uplifting thought about a loved one or a situation that would benefit from a positive outcome.

Vernazza is home to a small sandy beach that extends from the harbor. Visitors can swim, rent a rowboat, or sunbathe on a beach chair or flat rock. If you prefer calm water, Vernazza’s peaceful beach will be your cup of tea. The shallow water is perfect for wading or relaxing by the sea without worrying about getting splashed by huge waves.

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, Restaurant Belforte offers scrumptious seafood dishes in a gorgeous stone building that overlooks the sea. Locally owned for over 50 years, Restaurant Belforte serves spaghetti with mussels, clams, and prawns, and vegetarian dishes such as a mixture of wheat and seaweed known as pizzelle. Il Gattaccio Acciugheria & Street Food is a cozy, casual spot that serves delicious fresh seafood-infused pasta such as blue crab spaghetti, local favorites such as anchovies and sardines, and delicious local wine. Virtually every restaurant in Vernazza serves delectable fresh seafood that will leave you yearning to spend the rest of your life in a fishing village.
