A Little History
Long before Istanbul became a modern metropolis, ancient Constantinople was a bustling port city. Ships brought goods from around the world — and with them came cats, who quickly found work protecting grain depots, homes, and markets from rats. They weren’t just handy helpers; they protected food supplies and played an important role in preventing rodent-borne diseases. People in what is now Turkey learned to value them early.
Unlike many cities where street cats are seen as a nuisance and their populations tightly controlled, Istanbul has embraced its whiskered residents. Many locals feed neighborhood cats daily, while the municipality installs small shelters, provides food stations, and treats sick or injured animals. There’s even a local joke that among all the invaders who ever tried to conquer the city, only the cats truly succeeded — and no one minds.
Religion plays a role, too. Because most of the population is Muslim, cats are respected for their cleanliness and are welcomed into homes, courtyards, and mosques. There’s a well-known legend about a cat named Muezza, beloved companion of the Prophet Muhammad. One day, when Muezza fell asleep on the sleeve of his prayer robe, Muhammad supposedly cut off the fabric rather than disturb her rest.
Another story says Muezza once saved him from a snake, and in gratitude he gifted cats the ability to always land on their feet — even when falling upside down.
What Makes Istanbul’s Cats Different
Istanbul’s cats come in every size, color, and temperament, but most share a certain regal confidence. To locals, a cat sprawled across a café chair or shop counter isn’t intruding — it’s simply “conducting its business.” If a cat hops on your table, chances are no one will hurry to move her.
Many mosques, including some of the most famous ones, have resident cats who wander peacefully even during prayer. They’re treated with a gentle respect that surprises many visitors.
And if a kitten darts toward a busy street, there’s a good chance someone nearby will instinctively step in to stop it. Istanbulites protect their cats as if they’re part of the community — because they are.
Cat-Themed Places to Visit in Istanbul
Tombili Statue
One of Istanbul’s most beloved felines was Tombili, a chubby street cat from the Kadıköy district. She became an internet sensation after a photo of her lounging casually on a sidewalk — paw hanging over the curb like a seasoned philosopher — went viral. The image quickly turned into memes: someone added prayer beads, someone else placed a tea glass next to her.
When Tombili passed away in August 2016, locals petitioned for a memorial. Today, a small bronze statue sits on Güleç Street — in the exact spot where the famous photo was taken. Other cats frequently gather around the statue, so it’s a nice idea to bring a little food.
Cat Museum
Another must-visit spot for cat lovers is the Cat Museum on Serdar-ı Ekrem Street, 5C. The museum brings together paintings, sculptures, and quirky art pieces devoted entirely to cats. Visitors can explore interactive zones, take photos with cat-themed installations, and meet the real cats who live on the premises.
Admission is free, but donations are welcome, and you can buy clothing and souvenirs featuring original cat artwork. Part of the proceeds goes toward helping Istanbul’s street animals. The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
