The majestic steep slopes of Antelope Canyon, Arizona

Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon is one of the most photographed slot canyons in the Southwest USA. The canyon consists of two different canyons: an upper and lower level. The steep and sharp incline makes visiting this visually stunning spot a challenge for most. Since going in without any experience could be dangerous, visitors are able to step foot around the vicinity only with a professional guide.

The marbling effect of the canyon rocks is created naturally, through millions of years worth of erosion. It gives the canyon majestic look and mesmerises visitors. No matter the time of day or weather, avid photographers will be able to capture dynamic images of the sharp angles and elegant slopes of the two layers of canyons.

The canyons are located within the LeChee Navajo Nation, so they have their own significance for the Navajo people. The upper canyon is named by the Navajo locals as Tse Bighanilini or the place where water runs through rocks. Whereas the lower canyon is called Hazdistazi or spiral rock arches.

It should be noted that while the lower canyon has a more shallow incline compared to the upper canyon, it has been proven to be more difficult to trek for visitors, especially for first-timers. This is why an experienced guide is required to bring visitors around the vicinity of the Antelope canyons. The requirements for guided tours are particularly strict, as you will have no other way to enter the premises besides signing up for a tour. This can be quite costly, so only proceed if you’re willing to spend the money. Another thing to note is that due to the dangerous surfaces and slopes, pets are not allowed within the area, even service animals. So, consider this before considering a trip to the Antelope Canyon, Arizona.
