In the late 1800s, a brave Scottish civil engineer named George Grant MacKay decided to build an expansive bridge out of hemp rope and cedar planks in North Vancouver, British Columbia far above a rushing river. MacKay’s precarious bridge initially attracted his most daring friends. By the early 1900s, thrill-seekers from many different regions couldn’t resist traversing a rocking foot bridge that shifted with each gust of wind.

Thankfully, the Capilano Suspension Bridge—which is now part of Capilano Suspension Bridge Park—has been fortified and upgraded several times since the late 1800s. Visitors can also explore the Treetops Adventure Bridge, which offers a literal birds-eye view of the surrounding forest and river. Treetops Adventure features a Treehouse where kids and animal lovers can observe wildlife such as otters, racoons, and bears.
