In 1886, Sarah Winchester moved from Connecticut to San Jose, California, where she began a 36-year-long renovation of an eight-room farmhouse that eventually transformed into the massive, mysterious Winchester Mansion with over 160 rooms, odd architectural choices, and secret passages. Sarah was the widow of William Wirt Winchester, heir to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, and became one of the wealthiest women in the U.S. after his death. It’s believed she continually expanded the house to appease spirits of those killed by the Winchester rifle, as a psychic advised her to build nonstop. The mansion has a reputation for paranormal activity, prompting investigations and inspiring a horror film in 2018.

Tickets are required to enter the Winchester Mystery House, which offers various tours, including mansion, spirit, and garden tours, special flashlight tours on Halloween and Friday the 13th, and houses two museums on antiques and firearms.
