Garden of Ninfa, Italy: A Romantic Garden Among Medieval Ruins

In 1921, Italian nobleman Gelasio Caetani inherited a crumbling estate called Ninfa that was covered in overgrown foliage. Ninfa was once a thriving medieval village that ultimately languished due to a civil war and a relentless malaria outbreak.

Gelasio Caetani’s passionate love of plants inspired him to work tirelessly to create a lush garden estate filled with climbing roses, soft rows of wisteria, and a whispering bamboo forest. Along with his mother Ada Bootle-Wilbraham, Gelasio Caetani carefully cultivated an English-style garden with seeds that he gathered during his travels. Thanks to the meticulous care of the Caetani family, the Garden of Ninfa blossomed into what many plant lovers deemed the most romantic garden in the world.

Located approximately 45 miles south of Rome in the province of Lazio, Ninfa’s name is derived from a Roman temple in a nearby lake which was dedicated to water spirits known as nymphs. The Garden of Ninfa is fed by a natural spring that helps lush rows of magnolia blossoms, cherry trees, and water lilies thrive.
