Planning an adventure in the Pacific? The region provides an incredible selection of stunning islands, each of which has its own unique virtues. Whether you’re looking to spend your time hiking up the side of a volcano, or lounging on a pristine white beach, the chances are good that you’ll find a destination that suits you. But, to get the best from your break, you’ll need to plan ahead – and that means prioritizing the islands you really want to visit.

To begin with, you’ll want to form a comprehensive travel plan. This means deciding when you’re going to visit the region, and exactly how you’re going to travel through it. This might mean picking out a few choice stops and plotting a loose course between them. You can then add additional stops where time permits.

When it comes to packing, you’ll want to keep in mind the risk of mosquito bites. Bring plenty of high-deet insect repellent, and avoid shorts and t-shirts. A mosquito net is essential if you’re staying on dry land. You should also stock up on tablets, tests, and medicine.

Must-Visit Islands in the Pacific

The region contains some standout destinations that will appeal to a wide range of travelers.

Tahiti, in French Polynesia, is part of a hotspot for volcanic activity, and much of the interior of its larger portion (Tahiti Nui, or ‘Big Tahiti’) is largely uninhabited. This makes it great for explorers. Fiji and Palau are similarly impressive, with plenty of culture to go along with the natural beauty. They’re ideal for backpackers.

For beach enthusiasts, the Solomon Islands, and the Cook Islands, are worth checking out. If you’d like to go surfing, on the other hand, it’s Samoa and American Samoa that you should consider.

Best Ways to Travel Between Islands

One of the defining characteristics of the Pacific is that the islands are small. Therefore, you’ll likely want to move on from one area to the next fairly rapidly. Catching multiple flights can be a hassle, but it’s quicker than looking for a ferry. For the ultimate in luxury and flexibility, however, you might consider chartering a yacht, instead. That way, you’ll be able to decide exactly where you’re going, and when.

Making the Most of Your Island-Hopping Experience

When you’re traveling through the Pacific, you’ll want to be sure that you aren’t missing out on any memorable experiences. Make sure that you speak with the locals, and that you try out the foods they’re eating. There are plenty of excellent restaurants in the region, but you’ll need to research (and book) them in advance. You might research local festivals, so that you can arrive at exactly the right time of year, and expose yourself to islander culture.
