Shipwreck Lodge: Luxury on the Skeleton Coast
Sometimes, people just want to get away from the world and experience something entirely new. Some are looking for a peace and silence, while others seek the thrill and adventure. Regardless of what are you looking for, you’ll find it on the Skeleton Coast of Namibia.
Although, it is considered to be one of the most dangerous places on earth, at Shipwreck Lodge visitors can explore the wildlife and enjoy the views safely, from a private cabin.
When it comes to Namibia, the first thing that comes to mind is the Skeleton Coast. It is one of the most chilling, beautiful and fascinating places in the world. When the flawless dunes of the Namibian desert meet the restless waters of the Atlantic Ocean, it creates a fairytale like scenery, but don’t be fooled by it.
The Skeleton Coast is one of the most hostile places on the planet. Its 300 mile long shore is covered by animal bones and hundreds of ships, that have wrecked there over the years. Only the most resistant animals like: hyenas, lions, sharks and other predators survive there. This is a reason, why the area has never been inhabited.
However, it seems that the harsh conditions only make the Skeleton Coast more attractive for tourists. Surfers are looking forward to catch a good wave, adventurers want to explore the dunes and others simply want to enjoy the silence. So, the Shipwreck Lodge is a perfect place for anyone.
Located next to the dry mouth of the Hoarusib River, Shipwreck Lodge is a group of cabins built between the dunes of the Skeleton Coast. The design of cabins resembles the shipwrecks, found along the coastline. Contrary to their appearance, the 20 one bedroom constructions have a luxurious interior, providing as much comfort as any other hotel.
Bringing this project to reality was not easy. First, the lodge shouldn’t have any impact on the Skeleton Coast, as it is a national park. This meant, that constructors couldn’t lay a foundation on the coastline dunes and a building could be completely removed, if needed. Despite all of these factors, the buildings should still withstand the difficult weather conditions and still look luxurious.
Well, the team of architects made it happen. They used prefabricated walls and timber for the main structure, which add resistance against strong wind or sand storms. Each structure is supported by deep piles, that hold it together and can also be removed easily.
Aside from the one bedroom cabins, there’s also a large building, where visitors can find a lounge and a restaurant. Big windows aligned asymmetrically allow tourists to observe the dunes, the ocean and the wildlife.
Shipwreck Lodge offers the possibility of combining luxury and adventure to create unforgettable memories.
