Escaping London can be a godsend for mental health. While it’s one of the most exciting cities in the world, it can also swallow you whole if you’re not careful, and even visiting the city can take its toll after a few days of hustle and bustle.
We all have different points in which we need to slow down, we all have different triggers, but what you can be grateful for is that there are spaces just outside of the capital that are perfect for escaping to.
It’s what many Londoners do if they are struggling, and Surrey is always a great option. Whether looking to refresh mental health, or even seek out addiction help from an alcohol detox clinic in Surrey, the countryside around the county is what Londoners flock to. And visitors should too, for a day away from the stresses and strains of London life.
The Surrey Hills are a great place to recharge the batteries and see a different side to England, so if that sounds good to you, here are five spots around an hour outside of the capital that are perfect for finding that quintessential English time, a slower pace, and some natural beauty…

Offering some of the most iconic views in the county, this National Trust site provides a variety of walking trails ranging from gentle woodland strolls to more demanding climbs. The panoramic vista from the summit overlooks the River Mole valley and is particularly stunning in early spring or autumn. Pack a picnic, bring your walking boots, and don’t forget your camera – it’s picture-perfect England.

Tucked away in Cobham, Painshill Park is an exquisite example of an 18th-century landscape garden created by Charles Hamilton. This whimsical and romantic parkland features a crystal grotto, gothic temple, Chinese bridge, and a serpentine lake, all designed to create an emotional journey through nature and art. It’s ideal for a leisurely wander and a favourite with families. The café is worth a stop, and seasonal events such as open-air theatre and food markets bring the park to life throughout the year.

With its timber-framed cottages, meandering stream, and flower-laden tea rooms, Shere looks like it’s leapt out of a postcard. It’s a peaceful spot to slow down, enjoy a traditional cream tea, and explore the 12th-century St James’ Church. The village also has a small museum and several excellent pubs. For countryside walks, head out into the surrounding North Downs.
