Unveiling Sweethaven: Malta’s Charming Popeye Village
In the making of the Robin Williams’ Popeye movie, a quaint village was constructed as a film set within a short span of seven months. Today, this village continues to stand as a popular tourist attraction on the island of Malta.
Welcome to the vibrant and picturesque Sweethaven Village, home to the beloved characters of Popeye the sailor man, Olive Oyl, and Captain Bluto. The intricately designed wooden structures of the village took longer to construct than the filming of the movie itself. Perched on the cliffs above, the lively tunes and cheerful atmosphere invite you to immerse yourself in the daily life of Popeye and his friends.
As a guest in Popeye’s world, feel free to explore his home and even his private quarters, complete with a hammock above his bed. Experience life in Sweethaven Village as depicted in the 1980 musical film by visiting the school, firehouse, dentist shop, and bakery.
The Popeye Village experience goes beyond the set and characters, as visitors can participate in a remake of the film on location. Engage in the entire process, from scene planning and costume selection to rehearsals and acting. After the premiere, take home your personalized Popeye movie as a unique souvenir for friends and family.
Don’t forget to stop by the souvenir shop after being inspired by the Popeye Comics Museum, filled with collectibles and memorabilia. Make sure to pick up your free postcard at the Popeye cinema.
EXPLORE THE ACTIVITIES AT POPEYE VILLAGE MALTA
Popeye Village Malta offers a range of activities, including animation shows, Popeye’s Comic Museum, the cinema, and even the opportunity to create your own movie. While children engage with Popeye and his friends through educational games, adults can participate in mini-golf tournaments or relax on a 15-minute boat trip around Anchor Bay (weather permitting).
Enjoy additional entertainment at the water park, featuring a pool, sunbathing decks, and water trampolines. Witness a traditional silver filigree demonstration at the local silversmith’s shop and take home a piece of authentic Maltese jewelry. Stop by Santa’s Toy Town to see the elves at work, and depending on the season, encounter Ricky the Easter rabbit or spooky Halloween surprises.
The construction of the 20 wooden structures in Sweethaven Village began in 1979, taking seven months to complete. The project required tree logs from Holland, wood shingles from Canada, eight tons of nails, and 2,000 gallons of paint. The film set, which serves as a legacy to the late director Robert Altman, employed 165 people for construction and was produced by Robert Evans based on a story by Jules Fieffer.
Filming commenced on January 23, 1980, with Robin Williams as Popeye and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl. Despite earning only $60 million at the international box office, the film remains a cherished classic for many.
