Kamppi Chapel: a Silent Break From Urban Chaos

When it comes to architecture, religion has always been the greatest motivation for civilizations worldwide. From temples to churches, chapels and even pyramids, the gods inspired people to create some of the most stunning buildings. Today, things are no different and the Kamppi Chapel is a proof of it.

The city of Helsinki may not be a metropolis, but its inhabitants still have a busy lifestyle. The need to enjoy a few moments of silence, while in a heart of the city, inspired a team of architects to create the Kamppi Chapel.

Located on the Narinkka square, a giant construction made of wood is hard to miss. However, it may be confused with some modern art installation. Unlike many other chapels, that are full of detailed design, the beauty of this chapel lies in its simplicity.

Contrary to its imposing size, the wooden structure contains only one room: the chapel. Its curved walls give a sense of safety, while the warm tones of the wood lit from above, instantly make you feel more relaxed. In order to create this surreal atmosphere, designers used oiled alder planks for the walls and solid wood for the benches. As visitors take a sit, the outside world becomes nothing but a distant memory. It is a perfect place to sit in a silence, meditate or just to clear the head.

Built in the same minimalistic style, the entrance space is also used for local exhibitions. The simplicity of the room, with grey walls and wooden benches is a perfect spot to display art pieces.

In 2010, the Kamppi Chapel won the International Architecture Awards and has welcomed millions of tourists ever since. But, it remains as soothing and calming as ever. So, just take a break and enjoy the silence.
