Find your inner zen at Arashiyama’s Sagano Bamboo Forest, Kyoto
If you’ve come across some pictures of vast and peaceful-looking bamboo forests, it’s highly likely that those are pictures of Japan‘s iconic Sagano Bamboo Forest of Arashiyama.
Located about 30 minutes away from Kyoto city center, the forest is easily accessible by train. A popular tourist attraction is lined with hundreds of tall bamboo trees, which bring feelings of inner peace. Despite the visual feast, if you’re lucky enough to beat the crowds, take a slow walk and listen to the sounds of the forest as well.
In order to encourage locals to head out and appreciate the natural sounds of the environment, the Japanese government recognised the sound of this forest, as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan. The iconic rustling of the leaves in the wind and the soft knocking sounds of the bamboo trees, that gently sway against each other brings people close to nature.
The Sagano Bamboo Forest is also a perfect location for shutterbugs as well. The endless green of the bamboo trees provides the most zen backdrop for amazing photos. The pathway of the forest is pretty long and may seem endless at first, but it’s definitely a treat to take your time and take a nice, slow stroll to admire the sights, sounds and smell.
For a price, you could access some limited areas that charge an entrance fee for more unique views. As well as a calming experience of drinking some freshly brewed matcha green tea, as you admire the rustling of the bamboo leaves.
The ultimate relaxing experience is right here, if you enjoy a few hours walking. Make sure you get plenty of rest the night, before heading out to see the bamboo forest.
