Cumberland Falls: Gaze Upon a Moonbow in Kentucky

A moonbow may sound like something that only appears in a dream, but it is a real phenomenon that only occurs in a handful of places in the world. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Corbin, Kentucky is one of the rare locales where you can see a misty rainbow that occurs regularly and is illuminated by the glow of a full moon.

Known as the Niagara Falls of the South, Cumberland Falls is over 60 feet high and 125 feet wide. Visitors can view the falls from several vantage points, including a lookout point. One of the best ways to enjoy the falls is to kayak, canoe, or paddle board at the base of the thundering curtain of water. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can even attempt to scale one of the giant boulders that surround the falls.

Travelers who have their hearts set on seeing a shimmering moonbow should visit Cumberland Falls on the night of a full moon, or when the moon is nearly full. The brighter the moonlight, the greater the chance of seeing a shimmering lunar rainbow.

Mid-September through early November is an excellent time to go moonbow spotting. The temperature may be slightly chilly at night, but if there is no cloud cover the sky will be crystal clear. Also, a moonbow with a backdrop of orange, red, and gold leaves is gorgeous beyond compare.

The historic DuPont Lodge—which is located inside of Cumberland Falls State Resort Park—offers elegant accommodations with sweeping views of the Cumberland River. The hemlock, pine, and stone interior of the DuPont Lodge creates a warm, rustic atmosphere that is conducive to resting and recharging. The DuPont Lodge is conveniently close to Cumberland Falls, so you won’t have to trek far if you set out on a nocturnal moonbow expedition.

Visitors can also reserve a campsite in Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. During the warmer months, it is important to book your campsite at least a month in advance to ensure that you are able to secure a spot.

Kentucky’s striking natural beauty never fails to wow travelers who stumble upon Cumberland Falls by accident and have the rare pleasure of seeing a moonbow. Kentucky may not attract as much attention as the natural wonders of states like California and Colorado, but the quiet, lush beauty of Appalachia is as magnificent as any National Park that attracts huge crowds.
