Estaing: The Medieval French Village That Feels Frozen in Time

As soon as you cross the ivy-lined 16th century gothic stone bridge that leads into the medieval French village of Estaing, you will feel as though you have departed the 21st century and stepped into the distant past. Estaing is celebrated for its sprawling castle that offers a stunning view of a rushing river, a unique church that houses the remains of a saint, and a yearly festival that celebrates medieval culture.

During the festival, troubadours roam around singing medieval songs, a costumed procession winds through the streets of the town, and a medieval market sells artisanal goods. Visitors can even attend a lavish medieval feast on the final day of the festival where a knight is christened after a heated competition.

Visitors can also tour Estaing’s wine co-operative, where guests can sample an assortment of red, white, and rose wines that are produced in the Lot Valley. France certainly has its fair share of celebrated wine regions, but Estaing’s wines have steadily increased in quality and gained many enthusiastic fans in recent years.

Estaing is a stunning medieval town that is the ideal place to spend a day or two exploring on foot.
