Discover San Filippo Hot Springs, Italy: A Hidden Gem

Italy is famous for its luxury spas where patrons pay extravagant sums of money to soak in mineral pools and receive curative hydrotherapy treatments. One of Italy’s best-kept secrets is a towering waterfall that doubles as a natural hot spring in Bagni San Filippo, Italy, known as Fosso Bianco. Locals lovingly refer to Fosso Bianco as La Balena Bianca—or, The White Whale—because the waterfall’s jagged columns of bone-white rock resemble the sharp teeth of a ravenous white whale.

Fosso Bianco is located in a lush forest in Val d’Orcia in Southern Tuscany. Visitors must take a short hike to reach the hot spring. The good news is that Fosso Bianco is completely free to the public and much less crowded than the nearby Saturnia Hot Springs. Not many tourists are aware of the existence of The White Whale, so there is a chance that you will have the hot springs virtually to yourself.
The dramatic limestone ledges, patches of green vegetation, and steaming jewel-toned waters of Fosso Bianco look like something out of a dream. Simply viewing the White Whale is spectacular enough, but bathing in Fosso Bianco’s soothing warm waters will rival any pricey spa treatment. The lower pools of Fosso Bianco tend to be a bit tepid, whereas the pools closer to the top of The White Whale tend to be piping hot.
The sulfuric sapphire-colored waters of Fosso Bianco are celebrated for their curative properties. Tuscan locals often rub mud from the floor of the hot springs onto their faces, chests, and arms to promote healthy skin, clear breathing, and robust immunity. If you have dreamed of treating yourself to a posh Italian spa day but your travel budget simply does not allow for it, a day spent soaking in Fosso Bianco will rival the most sumptuous spa treatment.
