Sheldon Chalet: Alaska’s Wondrous Posh Lodge
50 years ago, an adventurous pilot named Don Sheldon risked his life so that he could transport mountaineers, hunters, and other fellow adventure seekers to some of Alaska‘s most remote locations. With his wife Roberta forever by his side, Don Sheldon perfected risky glacier landings. Don’s love of Alaska’s unexplored spaces inspired him to build a house in the shadow of Ruth Glacier. In 2018, Don Sheldon’s descendants converted his beloved house into a posh resort called Sheldon Chalet.

Located in Denali National Park, the only way to reach Sheldon Chalet is by helicopter. The good news is if you happen to have an extra $35,000 laying around—which is the price for a 3-night stay—the helicopter ride is included. Also included is a personal chef to prepare gourmet meals. Sheldon Chalet provides steaming hot coffee, chilled sparkling wine, and snacks galore for those who wish to sit on the chalet’s deck and gaze in wonder at Ruth Glacier and the towering peaks of Denali. The Sheldon Chalet package also includes two hiking guides to help you summit Ruth Glacier, and luxurious accommodations, including fur-lined pillows and blankets.
$35,000 for a 3-night Sheldon Chalet stay may sound a little pricey. However, Sheldon Chalet is one of the best spots in all of Alaska for stargazing and viewing the famed northern lights, Watching one of nature’s most magnificent light shows with virtually no light pollution is truly a priceless experience. During the warmer months, a crystal clear view of a summer meteor shower is equally as priceless. If your bank account is vast enough, the intimate Sheldon Chalet is the ideal place to contemplate the breathtaking beauty of nature and the vastness of the universe. Maybe that recently deceased mysterious rich uncle who graciously left you a sizable inheritance can fund your helicopter ride.
