Despite its breathtakingly beautiful scenery, British Columbia’s Yoho National Park does not receive as much fanfare as nearby Banff or Jasper. Yoho, a Cree word meaning “awe,” truly lives up to its name and deserves just as much acclaim as any other popular National Park in Canada.
Emerald Lake, one of Yoho National Park’s most iconic attractions, boasts a vibrant jewel-toned color resulting from light refraction caused by nearby glaciers. Depending on the light and the season, Emerald Lake can appear so bright that you’ll swear you’re looking at the water through an Instagram filter. During the warmer months, visitors can follow an hour-long trail that loops around Emerald Lake or rent a kayak and glide across the lake’s serene waters.

Home to numerous breathtaking waterfalls, Yoho National Park counts Wapta Falls among its most stunning. A short hike through a verdant forest reveals this vast, thundering waterfall. The sheer force of the water will hypnotize you, even if you only gaze at Wapta Falls for a short time.

If you’re an avid hiker, consider hiking the Iceline Trail. This trail winds past rushing waterfalls, pristine lakes, and a majestic glacier. The Iceline Trail takes about 6-8 hours to complete, so it does require a bit of stamina and planning. The effort is certainly worthwhile, as the trail offers panoramic views of some of the most beautiful and distinctive terrains in Canada.

- Most visitors travel by car or RV on the Trans-Canada Highway; there is no public transit in the park. As of October 23, 2026, Parks Canada reports Yoho Valley Road (Takakkaw Falls) and Wapta Falls access road closed for winter. All waterbodies in Yoho and Kootenay are closed to watercraft and angling through March 31, 2027. Check road, trail, and avalanche conditions before choosing a route.
- Admission
- Parks Canada daily admission (regular rates from September 8, 2026): CAD $12.25 per adult (18–64), $10.75 per senior (65+); youth 17 and under free; family/group CAD $24.50 for up to 7 people in one vehicle. A Discovery Pass may be better for repeated visits.
- Time needed
- There is no single park-wide visit duration. Choose one or more sites and allow time for seasonal road closures and mountain travel. As a planning estimate, budget at least a half day for one area and a full day for several stops; confirm the current route and trail conditions. Parks Canada does not publish a universal duration.
- Best season
- July and August are peak season. Some trails remain snowbound into mid-June, while seasonal roads and facilities close in autumn. Choose summer for the broadest road and trail access; check current conditions in every season.
- Opening hours
- Yoho National Park is open year-round. The Visitor Centre is closed October 13–April 30; public washrooms remain open all hours. Campgrounds generally operate mid-May to early October; day-use areas close seasonally. Yoho Valley Road is closed for winter and Wapta Falls Road access is currently closed. Verify current bulletins.
