The top ski resorts in Italy 2024
Italy isn’t just notable for its quaint seaside towns, historic cities, and stunning countryside, it also boasts a wide variety of different ski resorts. Whether you’re looking for advanced slopes to test your skills or magnificent scenery paired with high-end cuisine, you’re sure to get your fix of adventure.
In this guide, we explore four of the best resorts for a ski holiday in Italy, discussing what makes each one so unique.
Sestriere
With an altitude of 2,000m, Sestriere is by far one of Italy’s highest resorts. Fortunately, this means there are 400km of piste runs in every direction imaginable. Since the 2006 Winter Olympics, the resort has also seen improvements made to its facilities.
The area is well suited to advanced and intermediate skiers on the piste and there is also challenging off-piste terrain for those seeking fresh snow and a thrilling experience.
Courmayeur
Situated within the snow-capped peaks of Courmayeur, this ski region is ideal if you are planning a quick weekend getaway. Close to the French bolder and the Mont Blanc Tunnel, the slopes of Courmayeur are suitable for novices and experts alike.
If the weather permits, you can even try your hand at the unmarked and expert-only pistes – just note you will need a guide for this.
As it isn’t a ski-in, ski-out resort, you will be required to catch this lift back down the mountain once the day has ended. What this does mean, however, is that you’re free to explore the traditional village nestled in the valley. With restaurants, delis, and bars, you’re sure to experience Italian culture in all its glory.
Cortina d’Ampezzo
Cortina is somewhat of a celebrity in the world of ski resorts. Having hosted Italy’s first Olympic games in 1956 and been a location for the Bond film ‘For Your Eyes Only’, you can rest assured that the area is jaw-droppingly beautiful.
Located within the Dolomites, Cortina d’Ampezzo is home to 83 uncrowded (and mostly intermediate) pistes. It’s great for those without much experience on the slopes and has a great selection of boutiques should you wish to do some shopping in your free time.
La Thuile
If something a little quieter and more affordable is what you’re after, look no further than La Thuile. However, there’s still a good mix of runs that are sure to keep beginners and experts happy, including some high-altitude blue runs.
The resort shares its ski domain with La Rosière in France, allowing you to ski in two different countries in the same day. If that’s not enough to sway you, the views from the top are marvellous and the hotels are located a short distance from the main lifts.
