Explore Croatia’s Visovac Monastery in the Heart of Krka National Park
In the 14th century, a group of Augustinian hermits built a monastery on a secluded island in the middle of a lake in Croatia. In the mid-1400s, a group of Franciscan monks expanded the monastery in the wake of fleeing a Turkish invasion in Bosnia. Visovac Monastery—which is located in Krka National Park—is a peaceful oasis with a small yet captivating museum that showcases some spectacular religious and secular artifacts.
Encircled in trees, Visovac Monastery is only accessible by boat. The monastery’s remote location offers visitors a regenerative space where they can slowly explore a garden dotted with sculptures and palm trees, see an original medieval copy of Aesop’s Fables, and enjoy a gorgeous view of Visovac Lake and the surrounding scenery. The interior of Visovac Monastery is lined with ornate frescos, candles, and shrines dedicated to Jesus.
For a small fee, visitors can catch a ferry to Visovac Monastery from nearby Stinice, Remetic, or Skradinski Buk. Krka National Park offers boat tours to Visovac Island that also include excursions to nearby Skradinski Buk and Roski Slap waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy the exquisitely beautiful scenery of Krka National Park and bask in the serenity of Visovac Monastery.
The Krka Fairytale Village offers enchanted pumpkin and castle-shaped accommodations in Skradin, very near Krka National Park. Visitors can spend a meditative day exploring Visovac Monastery then retreat to a mushroom-shaped cabin in Krka Fairytale Village for a good night’s sleep. Each fairytale cottage features a small patio, a private bathroom with a shower, a flat-screen TV, and air conditioning.
Visovac Monastery is a cultural treasure that has served as a sanctuary of beauty and calm for nearly 800 years. A trip to Visovac Island is an absolute must if you’re searching for a historically rich place to recharge that is steeped in natural beauty.
