Symi: Relax on a Serene Greek Island

The small Greek island of Symi is the ideal place to relax and catch your breath during a whirlwind tour of Greece. Dotted with neoclassical mansions, a clock tower inspired by London’s Big Ben, and a church dedicated to the Archangel Michael, Symi is slightly more rooted in modern history than the nearby island of Rhodes.

In order to visit Symi, you must purchase a ferry ticket from a nearby port. During July and August, ferry tickets tend to sell out fast, so it is best to purchase your ticket at least two weeks in advance during high season. May and September are the perfect months to visit Symi if you’re hoping to avoid crowds yet still experience warm weather that is conducive to relaxing on one of Symi’s serene pebble beaches.

One of the best ways to view the mountainous island of Symi is to take a water taxi around the island. For a small fee, you can hop on a boat piloted by a knowledgeable local who will take you for a short spin around Symi’s coast. You can also stroll along Symi’s sleek harbor to view dainty white boats floating on shimmering blue water.

Symi is home to numerous delectable cafes and restaurants—many of which are located on the water. Visitors can sip on Greek wine and eat Symi’s famous popcorn shrimp while listening to the sound of gentle waves. Symi’s freshly caught seafood is not to be missed.

The Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis is a lovely 18th century Venetian-style monastery with a stunning interior which is located on the waterfront. Visitors can admire chandeliers, a lavish altar, and a silver icon of the Archangel Michael, who is revered as the patron saint of Symi.

No trip to Symi is complete without a few hours spent relaxing on one of the island’s rocky beaches. Nanou Beach is a peaceful pebble beach with gentle waves ringed by cypress trees and a natural stone wall. Nanou Beach is also home to a tasty restaurant that serves delicious drinks and snacks.

Most people travel to Greece to be steeped in one of the world’s most influential ancient cultures, but more modern areas like the island of Symi still offer plenty of beauty and charm. Symi’s colorful houses, laid-back cafes, and sparkling blue water will make you thankful that you spent a day or two exploring its lovely shores.
