Magical Nature Escapes: The Most Fairytale-Like Places to Visit

Some landscapes don’t need much interpretation. You arrive, and the setting already feels removed from everyday life, shaped more by geography than anything built around it. Movement tends to follow natural routes, including coastlines, valleys, and forest paths. This guide looks at a handful of destinations where that sense comes through clearly. From island chains in the Indian Ocean to glacial terrain in Iceland, each offers a different way of experiencing nature up close.

Most visitors start on Mahé, usually around Victoria, before heading out to the smaller islands. The Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market is worth a short stop to get a glimpse of local life, with fresh fish laid out early in the morning, spices stacked in small stalls, and ferries leaving from the nearby port toward Praslin and La Digue.

From there, it makes sense to experience the islands by water. The distances between them aren’t large, but the differences in landscape are noticeable, from granite boulders on La Digue to dense forest inland on Silhouette Island and long stretches of quiet coastline around Curieuse. Choosing between ferries and guided routes depends on how much ground you want to cover.

Booking the best Seychelles cruises is one of the most efficient ways to explore multiple islands. These routes are designed around the archipelago’s geography, linking smaller, less accessible islands with anchor points near marine parks like Sainte Anne or Cousin Island. You’re not just moving between beaches, but also passing through protected waters where reef systems and wildlife form part of the experience.

Walk Beneath the Glowing Canopies of the Sagano Bamboo Forest, Japan

The Sagano Bamboo Forest sits on the western edge of Kyoto, in Arashiyama, and it’s best approached on foot from Saga-Arashiyama Station. The route passes through quieter residential streets before opening up into the grove itself, where the path narrows and the sound changes, with wind moving through the bamboo creating a softer, more distinct rustling than in typical woodland.

Most people follow the main walkway, but it’s worth branching slightly toward Ōkōchi Sansō Villa. The entrance fee keeps numbers lower, and from the garden paths, you get a clearer view across the Katsura River valley. It also links well with a walk down toward Togetsukyo Bridge, which acts as a natural crossing point between the forest and the riverbank paths.

It’s easy to get around here. From the bridge, continue toward Iwatayama Monkey Park for a higher viewpoint, or loop back toward Tenryu-ji Temple. The area is compact, but the way the forest sits between the river, hills, and temple grounds makes it feel more layered than it first appears.

Trek the High Altitudes and Hidden Valleys of Nepal, South Asia

Kathmandu is usually the entry point to Nepal, and most routes begin with some time spent around Thamel or near Boudhanath Stupa to organise permits and supplies. From there, journeys move outward, either by road to trailheads like Syabrubesi for the Langtang Valley or by short domestic flights into Lukla for treks in the Everest region.

Conditions change quickly once you’re on the trail. Villages like Namche Bazaar act as key stops, both for acclimatisation and for sourcing basic supplies. Paths follow river valleys before climbing more steeply, with suspension bridges linking sections across deep gorges.

Trekking in Nepal is great, especially when approached with some structure. Established routes like the Annapurna Circuit or the Everest Base Camp trail are well supported, with teahouses spaced at regular intervals. This makes it possible to travel without carrying full camping equipment, while still reaching areas that feel remote, particularly once you move beyond the main stopping points.

Discover the Isolated Crystal Lagoons of Vatnajökull, Iceland

In Iceland, travellers approach Vatnajökull National Park from the Ring Road, usually stopping first at Skaftafell. From there, marked trails lead to viewpoints like Sjónarnípa, where you can look out over glacier tongues pushing into the lowlands. The terrain is open, with little shelter, so visibility depends heavily on the weather.

Further east, the landscape changes again at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Ice fragments break away from Breiðamerkurjökull and drift slowly toward the Atlantic, passing under the bridge before reaching Diamond Beach. The walk between the lagoon and the shoreline takes less than ten minutes, but the contrast between the two is noticeable.

Getting around this area is mostly car-based, with short walks linking key sites. Fjallsárlón, a smaller lagoon, is quieter and sits slightly off the main road. It’s worth the detour, especially if you want to spend more time close to the ice without the steady flow of buses that stop at Jökulsárlón.

Marvel at the Giant Ancient Baobabs of Morondava, Madagascar

Morondava sits on Madagascar’s west coast, and the town itself is fairly low-key, with most visitors passing through on the way to the Avenue of the Baobabs. The road out, Route Nationale 8, runs inland from the coast, with the first clusters of baobabs appearing about 20 kilometres from town.

The main avenue is where the trees line both sides of the dirt road, spaced widely enough that you can walk between them. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to visit, mainly because of the temperature and the way local traffic moves through the area. Zebu carts and motorbikes still use the road, so it feels like part of daily life, not something staged for visitors.

From here, some travellers continue toward Kirindy Forest Reserve, about two hours further inland. The route becomes rougher, often requiring a 4×4, but it opens up access to dry forest landscapes and nocturnal wildlife. The baobabs are the most recognisable feature, but they’re really just one part of a much larger region that’s still relatively undeveloped.

Ready to step into a fairytale?

What ties these places together isn’t a single type of landscape, but the way each one shapes how you move through it. The Seychelles works through water routes and island links, Kyoto’s bamboo forest connects river paths with temple grounds, and Nepal builds its journeys around altitude and trail networks. Iceland and Madagascar sit at opposite ends in terms of climate, but both rely on simple road access paired with short, purposeful walks to reach key locations. None of these destinations needs complicated planning. Once you understand how the terrain works, the rest follows.
