Carlsbad Caverns: The Majestic Beauty Below the Surface

The Big Room is an impressive sight, measuring more than 4,000 feet long and 255 feet high. With stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and other incredible rock formations, the Big Room is a must-see for any visitor.

If you want a more adventurous experience, check out the cave’s natural entrance. After descending 800 feet of switchbacks, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the deserts of Southern New Mexico.
Another popular attraction is the Hall of the White Giant. This is a room filled with spectacular limestone formations that have been slowly formed over time. Be sure to bring your camera—you’ll want to take lots of photos!

If you’re feeling brave, take a tour of the King’s Palace. This section of the cave was only recently discovered and is full of underground streams, deep pools, and other hidden secrets.
The vast majority of Carlsbad Caverns is not lit, so it’s important to bring a good flashlight if you plan on exploring deep into the depths of the caverns.

- Reserve a timed entry in advance, then buy the cavern entrance ticket at the visitor centre. Enter the cavern by elevator or the Natural Entrance trail. The seven-mile access road begins at White’s City; allow for the remote drive.

- Cavern entry: $15 per person age 16+; ages 15 and under free. Timed-entry reservation required year-round and costs $1. The reservation fee is separate from the cavern entrance ticket. Ranger-guided tours cost extra; currently suspended.
- Time needed
- Self-guided Big Room and Natural Entrance routes are at your own pace; hiking the Natural Entrance takes about one hour. Leave additional time for the 7-mile entrance road and ticket/check-in.
- Best season
- NPS does not name a single best season for the cavern; its temperature stays around 56°F (13°C) year-round. If the bat outflight is part of your visit, the free program runs April–October and the strongest flights normally occur August–September. The event is sunset-dependent and can be cancelled for lightning.

- Visitor centre 09:00–17:00. Cavern entry 09:30–14:30; last ticket sold 14:15. Park closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Weather and road conditions can affect access.
