Grutas de Cacahuamilpa: Explore a Grand Cave in Mexico
One of the largest cave systems in the world is located a short distance from the bustling city of Taxco, Mexico. Grutas de Cacahuamilpa features over 90 caverns, which are also known as salons. Only 20 salons have been fully explored and are open to the public. For a small fee, Grutas de Cacahuamilpa park rangers offer guided tours every hour. Grutas de Cacahuamilpa is home to several towering rock formations that never fail to ignite the imaginations of all who view them.
Grutas de Cacahuamilpa is considered a “living cave,” which means that a sizable amount of water still flows into the cave, forming new rock formations. Grutas de Cacahuamilpa has been periodically occupied for centuries by tribes who used the cave to perform religious ceremonies. The cave became a popular tourist destination since shopkeeper Don Manuel Saenz de la Pena stumbled upon the caverns in 1834 while trying to avoid apprehension by law enforcement.
Grutas de Cacahuamilpa is home to numerous distinctive rock formations, including a giant burst of stalactites that resembles a bottle with foam spilling out of it. “The Throne Room” is a cavernous hall that is fit for a king and queen, “The Cathedral” resembles a stately church spire, and “The Goat” will leave you wondering if the glittering stalactites and stalagmites are suddenly going to spring to life and start munching on your clothes. There is also a natural amphitheater that hosts subterranean special events and concerts.
One of the most curious sights in Grutas de Cacahuamilpa is a small rock pile adorned with a wooden cross. This area serves as the burial mound for an unlucky British explorer and his faithful dog. In the 19th century, this explorer was surveying Grutas de Cacahuamilpa when he sustained serious injuries. His dog attempted to find help, but locals, alarmed by the dog’s erratic behavior, worried it was either rabid or possessed. The dog ultimately returned to its master and perished by his side.
If you’re a cave enthusiast, the vast caverns and distinctive rock formations of Grutas de Cacahuamilpa are certainly worth exploring. Located within Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park, the area offers numerous hikes, opportunities for rock climbing, and two pristine underground rivers that are well worth exploring. The grand salons of Grutas de Cacahuamilpa are sure to leave you oohing and aahing.
