Several centuries ago, members of the Crow tribe made offerings to powerful dwarf spirits and built fasting beds for dreams and visions because they believed that the area around Medicine Rocks State Park was blessed by the gods because it was surrounded by an abundance of medicinal plants. In the late 1800s, ranchers moved into the area and often inscribed their names on the rocks. Prior to becoming a state park, Medicine Rocks also served as a popular picnic spot in the early 20th century.
