Workations are more than just a way to travel without using up your precious vacation days. Working in a stunning location can be an unforgettable adventure and a huge productivity boost. Just imagine working amidst the peaceful hum of the wind or the ocean instead of the loud, headache-inducing sounds of an open space office!

If you’re also interested in enjoying the world and working at the same time, check out our list of the most unique and often underrated workation spots around the globe. Who knows—maybe we’ll inspire you to experience your greatest adventure the next time you have the opportunity to work from anywhere. All you need is your work equipment, weather-appropriate clothing, and the mood to experience something special. Oh, and don’t forget to stay connected—use an eSIM card app to effortlessly buy a local data plan instead of shelling out money for expensive roaming plans.

Four unforgettable destinations for your next workation

1. Lapland, Finland

The beautiful and desolate region of Lapland is best known for being the home of Santa Claus. Indeed, if you visit Rovaniemi in winter—which we recommend—you’ll have the opportunity to see a magical snowy Christmas wonderland.

However, Lapland is not only about Santa Claus. This region, located on the Arctic Circle, is a dream come true for all winter lovers. If you decide to spend your workation there, you’ll have the opportunity to hunt for the northern lights, visit a sauna like a true Finn, see real reindeer up close, and even go on a husky safari with a team of eager dogs and experienced mushers. We especially recommend spending a night or two in a glass igloo. They offer the most unforgettable experience of sleeping under the stars. In winter, there’s also a good chance of seeing a real Aurora Borealis.

Let’s not forget that Lapland is as beautiful in winter as it is in summer, so you don’t have to wait for the next snow to go there. Fishing, hiking, horseback riding on desolate plains, canoeing—Lapland offers it all.

2. Boracay, Philippines

Have you ever dreamed of working from a stunning tropical beach overlooking white sands and sparkling blue water? Well, we don’t recommend it—sand and salty water don’t go well with electronic devices. But! The beach is a great place to relax when you’re done working.

Boracay is one of the most touristy regions in the Philippines, so you can be sure to find everything you need there: beautiful beaches, numerous restaurants with tasty local cuisine, and comfortable hotels with good internet connection. Even while working in the hotel lounge, you can watch and listen to the calming sound of the ocean waves, and when you’re done—just hop in the water!

The island of Boracay offers both luxurious beach resorts as well as more affordable inns and AirBnBs, so no matter what your needs are, you’re sure to find something to suit you.

3. Himachal Pradesh, India

Himachal Pradesh is a magnificent mountainous state in the northern part of India. Its landscapes are famous for mountain peaks divided by numerous rivers. Is it a good place for a vacation? Certainly—if you crave adventure.

Himachal Pradesh is a place for everyone, but if you are not a faint-hearted person, you may like it even more. Its extreme landscapes are the perfect backdrop for a wide array of adrenaline-boosting activities, from long and strenuous mountain treks to paragliding tours.

But of course, if you prefer a quiet stay filled with work, you won’t be disappointed either. Himachal Pradesh is full of vacation homes designed for travelers looking for lazy stays and wonderful views. Many are located on mountainsides, providing unforgettable work backgrounds.

4. Yucatán, Mexico

Mexico is one of the most popular workation destinations, and we can’t be surprised. Hot weather, sandy beaches with clear waters, amazing food, rich culture, and friendly locals—who wouldn’t want to experience all this?

The Yucatán Peninsula is particularly enjoyable and offers many attractions, even if your stay is tied to business. Depending on where you stay, you can explore ancient Mayan ruins and archaeological sites, observe local flora and fauna, hike through jungles, and even swim in cenotes—unique, naturally-formed pits filled with groundwater. Yucatán has about 10,000 of them!

As a fairly touristy region, Yucatán offers many affordable accommodation options. The cities are lively, cafés and restaurants are plentiful, and internet connection is fine—at least in urban areas. In more remote locations, you may need backup data plans.

A visit to Mexico is also a great opportunity to brush up on your Spanish. We recommend doing so—local residents are always friendlier if you at least try to speak their language!
